28.11.2010: Kuusamo: Kofler wins the first Competition

Andreas Kofler beat fellow Austrian Thomas Morgenstern Sunday to win the first individual World Cup ski jump event of the season.

Kofler amassed 331.2 points on the large hill at Kuusamo with jumps of 145.5 and 143.5 meters. Morgenstern trailed his teammate by 2.9 points. Reigning World Cup and Olympic champion Simon Ammann of Switzerland finished third on 310.1 points.

Sunday's win rounded off a successful weekend for Kofler, who also was part of the Austrian squad that won the team event Saturday along with Morgenstern, Gregor Schlierenzauer and Wolfgang Loitzl. Schlierenzauer went into the final round in fourth place but finished 14th after a disappointing second jump.

Statements of the Top 3:

Andreas Kofler (AUT): “It was a perfect weekend. It couldn’t have gone any better. I was relaxed and had a lot of fun jumping today because I already jumped well in training. I saw that Morgenstern jumped 145 m in the final and that was good because I knew long jumps were possible.

Thomas Morgenstern (AUT): “The whole competition was on a very high level. Jumps like the one in the final round are a reason why I’m a ski jumper. I experience real emotions in the outrun. There’s nothing better than to start the season with a podium result. I’m very happy about this second place.”

Simon Ammann (SUI): “My jumps in training were not so good so I had to stay calm. Today it went perfect for me. The hill can be very difficult to jump so it’s a good sign that I could do well here. The conditions were quite good and it was easier with the wind than yesterday. I don’t have any problems with my back at the moment and everything’s on track.”

The next World Cup Station will be Kuopio on wednesday. Sportsplanet will for sure inform you about the Results.
