03.02.2010: World Cup in Klingenthal: Ammann wins the Competition

Simon Ammann of Switzerland claimed victory in the ski-jumping World Cup event in Klingenthal Wednesday to extend his lead over Gregor Schlierenzauer in the overall World Cup standings. Ammann registered leaps of 133 and 134 metres for a total of 263.9 points, followed by Poland's Adam Malysz, who secured second spot on 257.2 points after jumps of 130.5m and 134m.

Ammann now has 1,249 points while Schlierenzauer trails on 1,092 with Austria's Thomas Morgenstern a distant third on 699.

Statements of the Top 3:

Simon Ammann (SUI): "It was difficult today because the inrun was very low. Adam is very stong in such conditions and that puts you under pressure. I did well at the take-off and had two great jumps. It was important for me to stay in the lead of the overall World Cup before Vancouver. I will not jump in Willingen so I need the lead of over 100 points. Adam has to be reckoned with at the Olympics for sure.”

Adam Malysz (POL): "I’m very satisfied with my performance. I was already confident after the qualification that I can achieve a good result here. It was my best result of the season and it already went well in the training. Also the atmosphere here in Germany, and especially in Klingenthal, is fantastic. Thanks to this second place I’m very motivated and optimistic for the Olympics.”

Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT): "The competition was on very high level. Simon and Adam jumped very well today but I’m also satisfied. A third place is not bad and my shape is good. I will decided tomorrow if I take part in Willingen.”
