27.12.2009: Nykänen faces charges over Christmas knife attack against wife
Olympic ski-jumping champion Matti Nykanen will appear before a Finnish court Monday after allegedly attacking his wife on Christmas Day, the STT news agency reported Sunday.
Nykanen, who has several previous convictions for assault, is reported to have injured his spouse Mervi Tapola in the face with a knife and now faces charges of attempted manslaughter.
Tapola fled to a neighbour in Ylojarvi where the incident occurred. Nykanen, 46, was sentenced to four months imprisonment in 2006 for assault against Tapola. In 2005, he received a 26-month sentence for stabbing a friend in the back but this was later suspended.
Nykanen became the first ski-jumper in history to win three Olympic gold medals at the 1988 Calgary Games in Canada. He also claimed four world championship titles.
